What makes a good typing game?
A lot of free typing games are mostly entertainment: your kid clicks and plays, but barely types. A good typing game makes typing the only way to make progress. Here is what to look for:
- Accuracy before speed. Does it reward neat typing rather than fast mashing? In these games a mistake breaks your streak, and a letter only lights up when it is right.
- Eyes on the screen. Does the next key light up on screen, so your kid doesn't look down at the keys?
- Built from the home row. Does it start at the home row and build up from there?
- Kid-safe. No ads, nothing to buy and nothing personal for your kid to fill in.
How to use them: a few minutes as a warm-up, ideally every day. Compare with your kid's own score, not with others. Learning every key step by step happens in Typcoon; more about the approach in the complete guide to typing for kids.
Frequently asked questions
Are these typing games free?
Yes. Every game on this page is free, with no account and no ads. The best score of the day stays in this browser. Only in Neon Dash does the score go to the leaderboard at the end, with a secret Neo-Delta name the game picks; nothing else is sent.
Will my kid learn to touch type with these games?
Each game practices one skill, like the home row or typing each letter exactly right. That helps, but it is not a course. Your kid learns every key step by step, with the right finger, in Typcoon itself.
Which keyboard do I need?
Any normal keyboard: QWERTY, AZERTY (Belgian or French), QWERTZ (German or Swiss) and the Spanish keyboard. The games recognize the keyboard as soon as your kid types; you can also pick it below the game.
Do the games work on a tablet or phone?
Yes. On a phone or tablet you play Neon Dash on Easy with two tap buttons, and you type Your Word in Neon with the on-screen keyboard. Touch typing is best practised on a computer with a keyboard: there your child steers Neon Dash with F and J, on every level.
