Free typing tools for kids

Three free tools for parents and teachers: test how fast your child types in one minute, print a color chart of which finger presses which key, and celebrate progress with a certificate. No account, nothing to install.

How the tools fit together

Start with the finger chart: print it and put it next to the screen, so your child can check a finger without looking down at the keys. Once the home row feels familiar, try the typing speed test. Take it again every week or two and compare with your child's own earlier score, not with anyone else. When there is something to celebrate, print a typing certificate.

Frequently asked questions

Are these typing tools really free?

Yes. All three tools are free to use, with no account and no sign-up. Nothing your child types is sent anywhere.

Do the tools work on a tablet?

The finger chart and the certificate work on any device. The speed test needs a physical keyboard, so use a laptop or desktop computer, or a tablet with a keyboard attached.

Can teachers use them in class?

Yes. Print the finger chart for every desk, let the class take the speed test at the start and end of a unit, and print a certificate for each pupil.

Learn to type while you switch a city back on

In Typcoon: Nightcode, every command your child types switches a piece of a blacked-out city back on. Typing neatly earns the most, so your child learns to touch type without even noticing. Free to try, no account needed.
